Why Sharpen Your Skates with SchwendiSharpens?

Updated: Oct 8

A Family-Driven Mission

SchwendiSharpens was born from one simple truth: when our kids got into hockey and figure skating, we realized how hard it was to find consistent, high-quality sharpening. Dull edges, variances in sharpening, and uneven hollows don't just ruin your glide—they ruin confidence on the ice. We set out to change that for our family, and now we're proud to offer that same standard of precision to skaters across our community.

Our process involves assessing skates before doing any sharpening. We check for damage, evenness, and measure the hollow to ensure we know what we are dealing with and where we are starting. With figure skates, we will also measure the width of the blade to center the hollow properly, and we will look over the No Skate Zone (NSK). If wear in the NSK is readily apparent, we can measure that zone for degradation to ensure safety when performing high-level figure skating jumps. In many cases, these assessments lead to questions that we ask to understand how the skates are being used and whether adjustments are needed. During the entire process, meticulous notes are taken to ensure consistent results.

Precision Tools for Every Edge

We don't rely on one machine for every skate type; we have two different machines that allow us to accomplish our mission of consistency for hockey AND figure skates:

SSM-2 Pro – SSM is a Sweden-based company trusted worldwide in providing solutions for

skate sharpening. You can find SSM equipment on several of the major Olympic rinks around the world. I chose this solution for figure skates due to its unique hollow-centering system, which allows for incredible precision and consistency even if the blade is not entirely straight, eliminating diagonally formed hollows. Using multiple calibrated blade support devices with various rollers and specific holders allows me flexibility to accommodate many different styles of figure skates.

Commercial Sparx 3 – this is the latest commercial version of the Sparx sharpening machine. Advanced automation ensures edge precision and repeatability for hockey players while maintaining the steel profile. Even with automation, an understanding of sharpening and years of experience with this machine and its calibration adjustments enable me to use it with greater precision than what you may find at other shops. The addition of cross-grinding rings lets me set hollows more proficiently on new steel, as well as adjust hollows when it comes time for that. Automation does not mean set it and forget it. Edges are always checked for evenness and deburred. I can even accommodate a superior level of hollow polishing when requested.

Whether you're racing down the rink or perfecting your double axels, rest assured that your skates are sharpened with the utmost precision and care, ensuring they meet the high standards of your performance.

Consistency You Can Trust

Skaters know the frustration of getting a "great cut" one time and a "bad cut" the next. At SchwendiSharpens, we've eliminated that gamble. Every pair of skates is handled with the same precision and attention to detail. You'll always know what to expect: edges that feel right every time you lace up.

Built for Hockey and Figure Skating Communities

We understand the unique needs of both sports because we live them:

Hockey Players – sharper turns, explosive starts, cleaner stops. A proper hollow can be the difference between a missed opportunity and a breakaway goal.

Figure Skaters – balance, grace, and reliable edges. An even sharpening supports clean landings and confident spins.

Your performance matters, and we tailor our process to elevate it.
